Baggage Handling System (BHS), Ben Gurion International Airport, Terminal 3

The Situation
Tel Aviv's Ben Gurion International Airport (BGIA) currently handles up to 10 million passengers annually (PAX). The original terminal building (Terminal 1) was constructed in 1935 and has since been expanded to meet its current capacity. A new terminal has been constructed to meet the growing capacity and demands of modern day travel. SecureLogic bid the BHS together with FKI Logistex A/S (Crisplant) and was awarded the baggage system contract in late 1999.
On the morning of Tuesday, 2nd November 2004, the first flight took off from the new Terminal 3.

The Challenge
The new Terminal 3 is designed for a capacity of 12 million PAX in stage I of the project and 16 million PAX in stage II. The objectives of the baggage handling system in the new terminal are to provide first-class baggage handling, while ensuring passenger comfort and security. The initial challenge was to complete stage I of the BHS project within 19 months of contract award. It was later decided to modify the layout to provide for future 100% HBS (Hold Baggage Screening) and to prepare the site for stage II; this modification required major re-engineering and rework.

The Response




In partnership with FKI Logistex A/S (Crisplant - Denmark), SecureLogic was responsible for the engineering, manufacturing, installation, commissioning and handover of the complete conveying system from check-ins through sortation, as well as the Inbound conveying systems. The project was completed on time in August 2001 despite major delays in the overall construction schedule; of the 30 contractors employed by BGIA on the new terminal project, the Crisplant/SecureLogic team was the first contractor to complete its SOW and the only one on schedule. SecureLogic engineered, manufactured and commissioned the conveyors as well as control systems (PLC, HMI and software) for the complete conveying system. During implementation, up to 150 workers were employed at a given point in time.




Outbound Baggage Handling System
Passengers and their baggage are separated at Check-in where bags are tagged with a 10-digit IATA bar code. At Terminal 3, bags are conveyed by 4 intricate lines of spiral conveyors down 4 floors (approximately 25m) within the building to the basement, where they enter a presorting area consisting of 2 double-tiered tilt tray sorters. This presorting area is designed as an infrastructure for a future Hold Baggage Screening system (HBS). Bags are then conveyed some 500m to final sortation, adjacent to the aircraft parking positions, where 2 additional sorters sort to some 80 destination chutes




Inbound Baggage Handling System
Baggage from Inbound flights is unloaded onto conveyor belts in the terminal basement. Bags are then conveyed up to the arrivals hall on ground floor where passengers retrieve their bags from one of the slanted baggage claim devices. Each claim device handles the baggage of at least one flight.


Complete Baggage Handling System
The complete system includes 136 check-in conveyor sets, 5000 meters of conveyor belt, 200 curve belts (including many spiral curves), 2 tilt tray sorters for pre-sorting, 2 tilt tray sorters for final sorting, 8 slanted claim devices and a computerized BHS management and control system

The Result
SecureLogic and FKI Logistex completed the project ahead of schedule, allowing the Israel Airports Authority extra staff training time before the new terminal opened. Terminal 3 went operational on the 2nd of November 2004, and baggage on the inaugural flight was successfully transported by the state-of-the-art baggage handling system developed and installed by SecureLogic and FKI Logistex.
